Drocourt Gorge Case Repeater Fully Restored Retailed by Captain Henry

19th century
For Sale by Arundel Clocks
Description

Hi

I have for sale a French striking and repeating carriage clock made in France around 1870;s by Drocourt which has just been fully restored both the case and the movement and original silvered platform . The movement has had new springs, the original platform fully restored and the back plate is stamped by the retailer Capitan Henry.

This is one nice and heavy clock built to top spec and a must for the best of collections , with the entire clock with the same matching numbers which again is on the base of the escapement.

The Case

The case is in solid shiny gilt brass and stands 16cm to the top of the handle high x 8.5cm wide with a depth of 8cm it is in perfect condition with mint thick 3mm bevelled sides/front/ and top viewing glass.

The case is very shiny and hard to photograph they do not do the clock justice at all this is the gorge case style.

The Dial

The dial is in original condition white porcelain housed in a gilt picture frame looks stunning in the flesh, the clock has very fine original black spade hands.

The Movement

The movement is an eight day time and strike which strikes the hours via a small sweet gong to the rear and also has the repeater button on top to repeat the last hour strike , the movement has been fully ultra sonic cleaned new springs added I also blued all the screws and gong in the same blue colour it is stunning to look at in my opinion.

The clock also contains Genre stop work to stop over winding a top quality feature only found on top end clocks.

Overall a very beautiful quality carriage clock by a top quality French maker that looks stunning on display and contains all of its original features this is quite a rare find these days.

I will ship worldwide and pack very carefully please read my feedback from other clock buyers.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A gorge case carriage clock is a 19th-century portable timepiece featuring a moulded brass frame with rounded corners, heavy bevelled glass panels, and a hinged top handle. Originated in France, these clocks were engineered for durability during travel while displaying internal mechanical movements.

Carriage clocks are traditionally constructed using cast and polished brass for the casing, vitreous enamel for the dial face, and thick bevelled glass panels. The internal movement consists of steel and brass gears, balance wheels, and chiming mechanisms.

Authenticity is determined by examining maker marks stamped on the back plate of the movement, serial numbers, and retailer engravings on the dial face. High-quality construction features such as heavy bevelled glass, hand-cut gear teeth, and signed escapements further confirm origin.

An antique carriage clock serves as a refined focal point when placed on a fireplace mantelpiece, bedside table, or writing desk. Its metallic brass finish complements both classic dark wood furniture and minimal, contemporary surfaces.

Keep the clock in a temperature-controlled environment away from moisture to prevent tarnishing and oxidisation of the brass casing. Regular servicing by a professional horologist every five to seven years ensures the mechanical escapement and mainspring remain lubricated and functional.
