Carriage Clock with Alarm and Repeater Button

19th century
For Sale by Its About Time
Description

This fine 'gorge' cased carriage clock was made in Paris circa 1870-80. The clock is in very original condition with some of the original gilt in places and with a gilt 'engine turned' masked dial. Bevelled glass to all sides and a top glass to view the original Bi-metallic, jeweled silvered lever escapement . Push repeat and gong striking on the hour with alarm facility. The movement is completely original and serviced, cleaned and polished and sold with a full 24 month guarantee . The dial showing Roman numerals with the blued steel Breguet hands. Unusually the alarm dial has Romans instead of Arabic's which is very attractive and quite rare. This is one of the slightly larger sizes of 'gorge' case and is very pleasing 'in hand'.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Developed in the early nineteenth century by French horologists, carriage clocks are portable timepieces engineered for travel, defined by a rectangular brass frame, glass inspection panels, and an upper carrying handle.

Traditional carriage clocks feature solid or gilt brass casing, heavy bevelled glass plates, balance-wheel escapements, and white fired enamel or engine-turned brass faceplates.

Authenticity is verified through thick bevelled glass, heavy brass construction, maker stamps on the back plate, original balance escapements, and period winding mechanism details.

A polished brass carriage clock functions effectively on a fireplace mantelpiece, within a study bookshelf arrangement, or atop an office desk to introduce classical horological texture.

Dust the brass casing gently with a soft microfibre cloth, avoid harsh metallic abrasives or chemical solvents that strip gilding, and ensure the mechanical movement receives routine professional horological servicing.
