Imari porcelain is a style of Japanese export ceramic produced in the Arita region and shipped from the port of Imari. Developed in the 17th century, it is recognized by its complex compositions combining underglaze cobalt blue with overglaze iron red, green enamels, and gold embellishments.

Imari wares were crafted from high-grade kaolin clay and fired at high temperatures. Artisans painted designs using cobalt oxide before applying glaze, followed by additional overglaze enamel painting and gilding, requiring multiple kiln firings.

Authentic pieces generally display subtle irregularities from hand-thrown or molded clay, visible brushwork in the cobalt and enamel decoration, and age-appropriate foot rim wear. Genuine antique examples lack modern uniform stamping and exhibit distinctive iron-red tones.

Imari plates can be displayed on plate stands atop sideboards or mantels to contrast with contemporary minimalist furniture. Alternatively, mounting them as a gallery wall creates a focal point in dining spaces or hallways.
