This Jacobean Revival monks bench dates from circa 1920 and is formed from dark brown oak. The structured piece combines a panelled chest base, a hinged lift-up seat, and a fold-back top that doubles as a high backrest. Intricate foliate scroll carvings adorn the upper backrest and the two lower front panels, complemented by carved lion head armrests and bracket feet. Metal hinges join the seating components together. Visible signs of age include surface wear and varied tones across the timber panels. Measuring 101.5 cm high, 109 cm wide, and 46 cm deep, the bench stands firmly as a practical item of hallway furniture designed to provide both seating and concealed storage in a modern home interior.

A monks bench, also known as a settle table, is a multi-functional furniture design featuring a pivoting backrest that folds down over the armrests to convert the seat into a table top, supported by a chest-style storage base.

Traditional monks benches were constructed primarily from solid hardwoods such as English oak or walnut, using mortise and tenon joinery, brass or iron hinges, and hand-carved relief panels.

Authentic period pieces display signs of hand-planed timber, pegged joinery, natural wear along the sliding or pivoting mechanism, and uneven patination within the base storage compartment.

Place the piece in an entryway or hallway to function as practical seating and concealed storage, balancing the dark timber visually with contemporary neutral wall tones, minimalist lighting, or linen soft furnishings.

Dust the surfaces regularly with a soft cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish occasionally to preserve the timber finish, ensuring the piece is kept away from direct heat sources to prevent wood movement.
