M. C. Taylor has dated this Oak Double Fusee Clock to the 19th Century.
Behind an 11" white painted iron dial with outer minute track, Roman hour numerals and the centre being signed for the retailer "HAMILTON & INCHES" and "EDINBURGH". Also having blued steel spade hands and a spun brass, glazed bezel.
The oak case is of good colour and patina with a turned dial surround, rounded bottom with a cockbeaded locking door and two large side doors with silk-backed metal sound frets.
Hamilton and Inches were renowned as retailers of fine quality items and opened their doors in Edinburgh in 1866. Usually these clocks have a 12" diameter dial and it is unusual for a striking example to have a smaller one. This is a very original clock that has had little if any work carried out to it throughout its life.
The price is for the clock in its present, working condition. However the movement is extremely dirty (but working and striking). The hands require re-blueing. The dial is good but there are areas of paint that should have a fixative applied. The case is good but the surround has shrunk which is usual (but the opened joints could be filled), the rounded bottom has areas of missing veneer and the left side door is missing. The door key is also missing. Therefore any work required can be advised upon application and a saving will still be made, as once fully restored, the price for the clock will be £4,250.
