Regency furniture refers to pieces produced in Britain during the Regency era (roughly 1811 to 1820) and the broader period spanning the late 18th century to the ascension of Queen Victoria. It is characterised by a strong classical influence drawn from ancient Greece, Rome, and Egypt, featuring clean lines, restrained ornamentation, and often dark exotic woods.

Regency seating typically utilised dense hardwoods such as mahogany or rosewood, frequently accented with brass inlay or gilt mounts. Construction relied on traditional joinery methods like mortise and tenon, with turned legs, reeded details, and hand-stitched upholstery supported by webbing and horsehair stuffing.

Authentication involves examining the timber grain, tool marks, and joinery methods consistent with early 19th-century craftsmanship. Genuine pieces often show natural oxidisation and wear appropriate to their age, alongside hand-cut screws or handmade fixings rather than modern machine-made hardware.

An antique window seat functions effectively as an accent piece beneath a large window, at the foot of a bed, or along a transitional hallway. Pairing historical wooden frames with modern minimalist surroundings or contrasting textiles creates a balanced, curated aesthetic.

Preserve antique mahogany by keeping it away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity sources like radiators, treating the wood periodically with traditional beeswax. Upholstery requires gentle vacuuming with a soft brush attachment and professional cleaning to protect delicate historical or period-style fabrics.
