Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Nineteenth-century French gilt mirrors are known for ornate classical ornamentation, including neoclassical crests, urns, and foliage. Originating during the Louis XVI, Empire, and Napoleon III periods, these mirrors were produced using traditional gilding techniques over carved wood and moulded gesso.

These frames were typically constructed from pine or lime wood substrates, coated with layers of gessoa mixture of chalk and glueand detailed with hand-moulded gesso elements. Water gilding using thin sheets of gold leaf was applied over clay bole, then burnished with agate tools.

Authentic period examples feature hand-cut wood backboards, foxing or grey spotting on mercury or silvered glass, and natural wear showing red or yellow clay bole beneath the gilding. Moulded gesso details often display fine hairline shrinkage cracks consistent with age.

Positioning a large gilded mirror above a fireplace, modern sideboard, or leaning against a feature wall creates a focal point that reflects natural light. The contrast between intricate neoclassical carving and clean-lined modern architecture creates a balanced interior scheme.

Dust the frame regularly with a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding water, chemical cleaners, or damp cloths which can dissolve gesso and remove delicate gold leaf. Glass should be cleaned by spraying cleaner directly onto a microfiber cloth rather than the frame to protect the gilding.
