Condition / Servicing Note:

Please note that antique clocks are complex and sensitive mechanical objects. While some clocks may be running at the time of listing we cannot guarantee ongoing performance without a full inspection and testing period by our specialist horologist. Where inspection, testing, or servicing is required this process can take between 2–12 weeks depending on the clock, the work needed, and current workload. This careful approach helps ensure the clock is properly assessed rather than rushed.

Clock Warranty

All clocks purchased from London City Antiques are supplied with a 12-month warranty from the date of purchase.

This warranty covers mechanical faults and failures arising from normal use. It does not extend to damage resulting from improper handling, unauthorised tampering, accidental or physical damage, environmental factors (including humidity, temperature fluctuations, or exposure to direct sunlight), or misuse.

Should a clock develop a genuine fault within the warranty period that meets the above conditions, we will, at our discretion and at no cost to you, arrange for the repair or replacement of any defective parts. All remedial work will be carried out by a fully qualified and experienced horologist.

In the unlikely event that a fault cannot be satisfactorily resolved, a full refund will be offered.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Longcase clocks, commonly referred to as grandfather clocks, originated in the mid-seventeenth century following the invention of the pendulum escapement. These tall, free-standing timepieces were designed to enclose the long pendulum and falling weights required for accurate timekeeping, evolving into status symbols through fine joinery and elaborate dial decoration during the Georgian and Victorian periods.

Georgian longcase clocks were predominantly crafted using native hardwoods such as oak for the carcass, frequently veneered with fine timbers like mahogany, walnut, or rosewood. Internal movements were constructed from solid brass and iron, while dials were executed in hand-painted sheet iron or engraved brass.

Authentic period longcase clocks feature hand-cut gear teeth on heavy brass clock movements, weight-driven pendulum mechanisms, and period-appropriate cabinet construction such as hand-cut dovetails. Dials on late eighteenth-century examples show hand-painted Roman numerals and painted spandrels rather than modern screen printing.

An antique longcase clock functions as an architectural anchor in entrance halls, stair landings, or formal dining rooms. Positioning the tall wooden structure against a contemporary neutral wall allows the rich timber grain and mechanical detail to serve as a focal point.

Maintain a stable room temperature and humidity level to prevent the timber case from warping or splitting. Ensure the clock case is positioned perfectly level on the floor, wind the weight mechanism regularly using the correct key, and arrange for professional horological movement cleaning and lubrication every five to seven years.
