Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A longcase clock, commonly termed a grandfather clock, originated in the mid-seventeenth century following the invention of the anchor escapement mechanism. This horological innovation allowed for a longer pendulum requiring a tall, free-standing wooden cabinet to house and protect the hanging weights and pendulum.

Antique longcase clocks typically feature solid or veneered mahogany timber cases, often decorated with satinwood stringing or marquetry inlays. The internal movement comprises brass plates, steel arbors, cast brass dials with silvered chapter rings, and tubular chimes driven by heavy brass weights.

Authenticity is determined by evaluating the construction of the hand-crafted movement, period-appropriate hand-engraved or cast brass dials, traditional hand-cut joinery inside the cabinetry, and natural signs of age such as minor oxidisation on metal surfaces and patina across timber finishes.

Positioning a tallcase clock as an architectural focal point in an entryway, stair landing, or formal reception room adds structural height and historic balance. Juxtaposing rich mahogany tones against neutral paintwork or modern minimalist decor allows the craftsmanship of the cabinet to stand out.

Keep the case positioned on a level floor away from direct sunlight, central heating radiators, and damp draughts to prevent timber movement. Mechanical movements should be cleaned and oiled every three to five years by a qualified horologist, and the cabinet should be dusted regularly with a dry cloth.
