N Wilson Antiques Clocks has dated this Mahogany Moon Phase Longcase Clock to the Georgian era.
It has an eight-day movement on a broken arch painted face with rolling moon. This truly is a majestic clock which has the most fantastic mahogany case and is incredibly detailed.
If we start with the hood, this has swan necks with arched molded cornice and is finished which lovely brass pateras to the center of the swan necks is a wonderful pediment. The hood door is beautifully inlaid with stringing and is flanked by superb square reeded and inlaid columns. Above the hood door is also inlaid and there is a superb oval inlay of vase of flowers to the central pediment.
Moving down to the trunk, the lovely shaped triple peak full length door which is beautifully edged in fine stringing. The trunk door is flanked by square reeded and inlaid columns and above the top of the columns is a pretty inlay of a vase of flowers. The door contains the most wonderful flame mahogany. The key hole has a lovely diamond shape of inlay.
The base is is again beautifully inlaid with stringing in a square and with cross banding to the outside and a pretty flame mahogany to the centre whilst the front corners are canted. The base is then raised on lovely delicate ogee bracket feet.
The eight-day movement has a broken arch painted face with rolling moon and centre date. The dial is set out with Roman numerals with small Arabic numerals above and the four corners are beautifully adorned with scenes depicting the four seasons. To the centre of the dial is the centre date and it is also beautifully painted with a Royal Court scene with a gentleman on the throne wearing a plume of feathers and being knelt to by a courtier holding a scroll whilst other members of the court look on. The clock has the most very pretty fingers. The moon disc is lovely and in addition to the two moons has a lovely cottage scene and a galleon.
The dial bears the makers name Furnival OLDHAM. In 'Greater Manchester CLOCKS & CLOCKMAKERS by Edmund Davies' there are two Furival's of Oldham but one is listed as a clock case maker indicting this clock to be by Benjamin Furnival:
'FURNIVAL, BENJAMIN Oldham & Stockport, born 1770 - 1850. Married at Warrington in 1799. Clockmaker of Oldham, took THOMAS MOSS as apprentice on 18 February 1791, for 5 years at £30, and EDWARD P. PEACOCK on 3 September, 1795, for 8 years at £20 . At Market Place, Stockport, in 1816 - 25. Possibly the man at Birkenhead in 1834 - 50'. The book also references six of his clocks with one description being very similar to this clock, 'Painted dial 8-day longcase with arch rolling moon, signed 'Furnival, Stockport'. Mahogany case, three point Gothic trunk door, and square reeded trunk and hood columns'.

The clock is in lovely condition. The movement is lovely and clean and in perfect working order having recently been professionally cleaned and serviced.
