Antique Edwardian Inlaid Mahogany Longcase Clock

1900 - 1920
Description

A beautifully proportioned antique Edwardian longcase clock dating from the early 20th century, finely crafted in mahogany with elegant line inlay and a shaped hood. The case features a swan-neck pediment with brass finials, a glazed trunk door revealing the brass pendulum and a square brass dial with spandrels and silvered chapter ring.

The movement is an eight-day striking mechanism striking the hours on a mellow bell and remains in excellent working order. The dial, spandrels, and hands are all original, while the oak-backed case retains its rich, warm patina and shows no signs of damage or restoration.

This clock embodies the refined style and quality craftsmanship of the Edwardian period — lighter and more graceful than its Victorian predecessors — making it an elegant statement piece for both traditional and contemporary interiors.

Condition / Servicing Note:

Please note that antique clocks are complex and sensitive mechanical objects. While some clocks may be running at the time of listing we cannot guarantee ongoing performance without a full inspection and testing period by our specialist horologist. Where inspection, testing, or servicing is required this process can take between 2–12 weeks depending on the clock, the work needed, and current workload. This careful approach helps ensure the clock is properly assessed rather than rushed.

Clock Warranty

All clocks purchased from London City Antiques are supplied with a 12-month warranty from the date of purchase.

This warranty covers mechanical faults and failures arising from normal use. It does not extend to damage resulting from improper handling, unauthorised tampering, accidental or physical damage, environmental factors (including humidity, temperature fluctuations, or exposure to direct sunlight), or misuse.

Should a clock develop a genuine fault within the warranty period that meets the above conditions, we will, at our discretion and at no cost to you, arrange for the repair or replacement of any defective parts. All remedial work will be carried out by a fully qualified and experienced horologist.

In the unlikely event that a fault cannot be satisfactorily resolved, a full refund will be offered.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An Edwardian longcase clock is a tall, pendulum-driven floor clock housed in a freestanding wooden cabinet, crafted during the reign of King Edward VII between 1901 and 1910, frequently incorporating classical inlay and Sheraton revival styling.

These clocks are primarily constructed from mahogany or mahogany veneers decorated with satinwood and boxwood marquetry, featuring brass dials, cast spandrels, glass door panels, and iron internal weights.

Authentic Edwardian longcase clocks display slim proportions, classical marquetry such as urns or swags, brass dials with Tempus Fugit bosses or moon phases, and weight-driven mechanical clockwork.

Position a longcase clock in a hallway, entrance foyer, or living room alcove where its vertical height creates an architectural feature alongside neutral walls or period panelling.

Maintain the piece by keeping it away from direct sunlight and radiators, dusting with a microfiber cloth, applying natural beeswax sparingly, and having the mechanical movement oiled by a horologist every few years.
