Magnificent Georgian Glasgow Longcase Clock

18th century
For Sale by Clockwise
Description

Clockwise is delighted to present another high quality Scottish Georgian longcase clock. The striking flame mahogany case stands 92 inches (7 feet 9 inches) tall on bracket feet and is crossbanded with ebony inlays throughout, the trunk door retaining its original key and lock. The trunk is flanked by an inset reeded decorative pillar to each side. The elegant swan-neck hood has matching inset reeded pillars and a sound fret to each side.

The glorious 13 inch dial is a particular feature of the clock, the spandrels painted with scenes depicting the four seasons and the arch with an interior scene depicting 'Peace and Plenty'. The clock also has both a subsidiary seconds and working date dial. Original stamped and pierced matching brass hands complete the stunning overall effect.

The movement is an eight day anchor escapement with a rack strike to sound the hours on a sonorous bell. The clock is powered by matching weights and the movement has just been overhauled and fitted with new wire lines and as such benefits from my three year guarantee; this clock comes complete with its original painted pendulum and a crank key.

John Finlayson ran a Silversmith business on 153 Stockwell Street, Glasgow from 1809 to 1828. Thomas Finlayson was a Jeweller listed at 5 Nelson Street, Glasgow, active during the 1810s and 1820s. In all likelihood this clock was commissioned by Thomas and took pride of place in his shop.

This impressive clock really is a beautiful piece of furniture and delivery is available.

Clockwise specialises in longcase and bracket clocks and with clients from the world of business, film, sport, royalty and aristocracy - yet more than happy with traditional clients - Clockwise has an unrivalled reputation for excellence and superb service.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Georgian longcase clock is an 18th to early 19th-century floor-standing timepiece featuring a pendulum movement housed within a tall wooden case, typically crafted in mahogany or oak.

These timepieces were constructed using solid mahogany or oak frame casings, flame mahogany veneers, hand-painted iron dials, and internal brass weight-driven movements.

Authentic Scottish examples often feature swan-neck pediments, local clockmaker signatures painted on the dial, hand-painted spandrel artwork, and period mortise-and-tenon cabinet joinery.

A longcase clock serves as an architectural focal point in a hallway, dining room, or library, contrasting with contemporary lines or complementing traditional decor.

Position the clock away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage, wind the mechanism regularly using the correct key, and consult a qualified horologist for mechanical servicing.
