Originating in the mid-19th century, Classical overmantel mirrors were designed to sit directly above a fireplace mantlepiece. They are defined by grand architectural proportions, top pediments, flanking side columns or pilasters, and intricate mouldings inspired by ancient Greek and Roman motifs.

These mirrors were constructed from carved timber frames overlaid with gesso, a plaster-like compound used to mold detailed ornamental shapes. Gold leaf was then applied over a clay base (bole) and hand-burnished, while the mirror plate was made using traditional mercury or silvering processes.

Authentic pieces display signs of age, including natural craquelure in the gesso, subtle wear to the gold leaf revealing the red or grey bole beneath, and wooden backing boards secured with old iron nails. The original glass often shows slight oxidation, speckling, or gentle distortion.
