Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian cast iron doorstop, often referred to as a door porter, is a heavy decorative weight designed to hold interior or exterior doors open. Popularised during the nineteenth century, these objects featured ornate castings ranging from mythical figures and animals to famous literary characters like Punch.

Antique cast iron doorstops were created using sand casting moulds, where molten iron was poured into sand impressions formed by a wooden or metal master pattern. They typically feature flat backs or hollow rear profiles and often incorporate integrated looped handles for ease of lifting.

Authentic Victorian pieces feature subtle surface irregularities, seam lines from two-part moulds, and natural patination or surface oxidisation acquired over time. Original castings display soft, hand-finished details rather than the sharp, uniform edges typical of modern reproductions.

Position the piece beside a heavy wooden door, on a fireplace hearth, or atop a low shelf as an intriguing sculptural accent. The dark metal finish complements both classic period properties and industrial or rustic decor schemes.

Remove dust with a soft bristle brush or dry cloth, avoiding harsh liquid cleaners that can trigger corrosion. Apply a thin layer of microcrystalline wax or paste wax periodically to protect the metal surface from moisture and oxidisation.
