Description

A very small and highly desirable English Fusee Ormolu & Gilt brass Marble mantel clock by this well known maker.

The high quality and substantial 8 day duration single fusee chain driven movement with anchor escapement. The 3½" round gilt brass dial with Roman chapters, exquisitely made heart shaped blued steel hands of typical Payne design and a machine turned centre. The dial enclosed within a glazed bezel. The double marble plinth with adjustable gilt brass feet, swag and flower design to the front elevation and the drum shaped top resting on gilt scrolls.

Note: William Payne & Co of 163 New Bond Street are recorded as working from 1826-1875. Benjamin Lewis Vulliamy was also using this particular style of clock at this period.

Originating in British horology during the eighteenth century and refining through the Regency and Victorian eras, fusee clocks were engineered for precise timekeeping. Maker signatures, such as London maker engravings on the dial or movement backplate, along with hand-turned screws and heavy cast metalwork, indicate genuine period craftsmanship.

A fusee mantel clock can be placed centrally on a living room mantelpiece, console table, or study desk. Its classical metallic finish and stone base create visual contrast when paired against clean architectural lines or modern painted backdrops.
