Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE EDWARDIAN ERA:
Satinwood banding and corner fans: typical Edwardian Sheraton-revival cabinet work.
Solid pine backboard: natural shrinkage gaps around the fixings show long seasoning.
Pressed brass ring handles: original period fittings with natural tarnishing.
Fine dovetails in drawer sides: hand-finished joinery from the turn of the century.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Edwardian furniture, produced between 1901 and 1910, is known for drawing inspiration from 18th-century Hepplewhite, Sheraton, and Chippendale styles. It typically features lighter proportions than Victorian furniture, utilising polished mahogany, delicate satinwood inlay, and tapered square legs.

High-grade Cuban or Honduras mahogany served as the primary timber, valued for its fine grain and reddish-brown hue. Decorative elements incorporated contrasting satinwood or boxwood inlays alongside cast brass hardware such as ring handles and escutcheons.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints inside drawers, natural wear on timber contact points, and original brass fixings with light patination. Look for precise marquetry or stringing work and period-appropriate drawer linings such as solid oak or mahogany.

A side cabinet works effectively as a hallway console, dining room servery, or bedroom accent piece. Pairing rich mahogany wood tones with neutral wall colours or contemporary artwork creates an engaging contrast between traditional craftsmanship and modern design.

Dust regularly using a dry, soft microfibre cloth following the wood grain. Protect the timber from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent drying or discolouration, and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the original finish.
