FAQs

During the late Georgian period, particularly from the 1780s through the early 1800s, satinwood imported from the West Indies became highly prized by cabinetmakers for its vibrant golden tone and silky figure. Designers such as Thomas Sheraton favoured satinwood for refined occasional tables, desks, and commodes.

These tables were typically constructed with a solid timber carcass finished in fine satinwood veneers, often highlighted by contrast stringing in boxwood or ebony. Drawers commonly utilised oak or pine secondary timbers, finished with cast brass hardware.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer construction, uneven oak or pine secondary lining, and subtle shrinkage lines along veneer seams. The satinwood should show a muted, mellowed patina rather than a harsh modern synthetic sheen.

Place the table alongside a clean-lined modern sofa or armchair to create a balance of historic character and modern simplicity. It functions well as a display surface for a modern task lamp, small vase, or stack of books.

Dust regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth following the direction of the wood grain. Protect the satinwood veneer from direct sunlight and central heating sources to prevent drying or bleaching, and apply a light coat of natural beeswax once or twice a year.
