Description

Unusual 19th-Century Dutch Marquetry Wine Occasional Table

Brief Description:

This is a charming and unusual 19th-century Dutch marquetry wine or occasional table, beautifully constructed and displaying a wonderful rich colour and patina.

The circular top is finely decorated with an extensive arrangement of contrasting floral and foliate marquetry, centred by a large flower head and surrounded by scrolling stems, leaves and individual blooms.

The table is supported by an impressive turned and fluted pedestal column, incorporating a carved lobed section and distinctive applied roundel decoration.

Of particular appeal is the shaped tripartite platform base, which is further embellished with individual floral marquetry sprays and raised upon three small turned bun feet.

A very decorative piece of 19th-century furniture with an attractive combination of architectural turning, figured timber and delicate floral inlay. Its relatively small proportions make it particularly suitable as a wine table, lamp table, plant stand or occasional table.

A Dutch marquetry wine table is a compact, decorative table originating from the Netherlands, characterised by intricate floral wood inlays and a carved central pedestal designed to hold drinks or small display items.

These tables are primarily constructed from solid and veneered hardwoods such as walnut or mahogany, featuring delicate floral and foliate patterns inlaid with contrasting light fruitwoods or boxwood.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut timber veneers, natural age-related patination, subtle variations in joinery beneath the top, and detailed hand-carved elements on the central column and base.

Position this accent table beside an armchair or within an unutilised reading nook to provide a surface for drinks, contrasting its detailed woodwork against neutral upholstery.

Position the timber away from direct sunlight and radiators to prevent veneer movement, dust regularly with a clean microfibre cloth, and apply clear beeswax polish sparingly twice a year.
