Victorian Barley Twist Stand / Whatnot

19th century
Description

A twin-tier Victorian whatnot or stand, constructed in solid mahogany throughout. The front supports feature barley-twist turning, with baluster-turned rear supports, all standing on turned feet with brass castors.

Condition Report

In good, solid antique condition, with a number of minor marks to the tiers.

I would suggest that the stand may originally have had additional tiers, and that the brass castors are later replacements. The unit remains structurally sound and presents well.

The photographs form part of the condition report, so please review them carefully. Further images or a video viewing can be provided on request. Viewings are welcome at our Southampton unit, strictly by appointment.

If you have any questions regarding this piece, please don't hesitate to get in touch.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A whatnot is an open-shelved piece of furniture popularised during the 19th century, designed with multi-tiered surfaces supported by turned columns to display ceramics, books, and household ornaments.

Traditional Victorian whatnots were constructed primarily from solid dark woods such as mahogany, walnut, or rosewood, often featuring hand-turned spiral supports and fitted brass casters.

Authentic period examples feature hand-cut joinery, original metal or brass casters secured with steel pins, hand-carved solomonic spiral legs, and uneven surface patination matching its age.

Position the piece in an alcove or quiet corner to showcase studio pottery, framed prints, or houseplants, allowing the turned woodwork to contrast against plain walls.

Dust surfaces regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a thin layer of natural beeswax polish annually, keeping the piece away from direct heat sources and moisture.
