Early 19th-Century Giltwood Pier Mirror, c.1820

A particularly elegant and impressively scaled early 19th-century giltwood pier mirror, circa 1820, retaining its original silvered mirror plate and panelled back.

The tall architectural form is beautifully restrained, with a softly rounded upper section enclosed by a slender giltwood frame. The frame is finely carved and moulded throughout with a continuous sequence of floral rosettes, fruiting and foliate ornament, giving the mirror richness and definition without overwhelming its elegant proportions.

Of particular note is the survival of the original mercury-silvered mirror glass, displaying the subtle variation, light foxing and gentle atmospheric character associated with early 19th-century plates. The reverse retains its substantial original panelled timber backing, an increasingly desirable feature on mirrors of this age and scale.

The gilding has acquired a wonderfully warm, mellow surface with the natural variation and wear expected of a piece approaching two centuries old. The narrow frame and exceptionally generous mirror plate give the piece a remarkably contemporary quality, despite its Regency-period origins.

At 250 cm high, this is an unusually imposing mirror and would make a superb architectural statement in a large entrance hall, drawing room or dining room, either hung above a console or positioned as a full-length mirror.
