An 18th Century Venetian Mirror

18th century
For Sale by Hobo Design
Description

An 18th century Venetian mirror with its original foxed plate. The frame is finely detailed with delicate floral carving and a pierced crest to the top, centred by a small etched mirror plate. There are layers upon layers to this mirror.

Hobo loves because: I always love a juxtaposition - this feels simple but detailed at the same time. The simplicity of the frame paired with the sunflower details to each corner. Not forgetting the etched glass to the top centre plate, subtle but still there.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Venetian mirrors from the 18th century frequently incorporate intricate carved crestings, ornate giltwood frames, and mercury-silvered glass crafted to reflect light across grand rooms.

Craftsmen typically carved lightweight woods such as pine or lime, applying gesso and gold leaf over a red bole base alongside hand-blown mercury glass.

Authentic pieces show hand-cut wooden backboards, dark foxing or oxidation spots on the mercury glass, and slight wear to the gilding revealing the underlying bole.

Positioning a carved giltwood mirror above a minimalist console table or mantlepiece creates an engaging contrast between historic detail and clean modern lines.

Dust the carved gilding using a dry, soft-bristled brush, and clean the glass lightly with a dry microfiber cloth without liquid solutions contacting the frame.
