Small 19th Century Italian Giltwood Florentine Mirror

19th century
Description

A Very Attractive Mid 19th Century Italian Giltwood Wall Mirror, In The Florentine Taste, Of Unusual Diminutive Proportion, Having Profuse Foliate Carved Decoration To Gilt Wood Cushion Frame, Enclosing Later Replaced Mirror Plate.

This is a very attractive mid 19th century Florentine giltwood wall mirror and a reasonable amount smaller than the standard size we tend to see for this type of mirror, meaning it is very much suitable for a wide variety of settings around the home.

All things considered it is in pretty good condition, with just a few old repairs to the carved frame and of course the expected scuffs and scrapes. More often than not however mirrors of this design have been left battered and bruised with many, many repairs and missing pieces so in our opinion its great to find one that has clearly been as well loved as this.

The mirror plate itself is not brand new, but also definitely not original, with just a few very minor spotted silvered areas. It is also probably that the carved frame itself started life designed to hold a painting, only to be relatively quickly converted into the attractive wall mirror which we find today, as that is extremely common for mirrors of this design.

It’s also worth noting that the mirror is designed in such a way that it will happily hang portrait or landscape, which of course significantly enhances the available functionality of this piece.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Florentine giltwood design is characterised by intricate openwork carving, stylised foliage, and fluid acanthus leaf scrolls finished with gold leaf application.

These frames were typically carved from softwoods such as pine or lime, coated with gesso, and gilded using gold leaf over a clay bole ground.

Authentic pieces display hand-carved joinery marks, subtle rubbing or wear revealing the red clay bole beneath the gilding, and age-related oxidisation on the glass mirror plate.

Position the mirror above a contemporary sideboard or console table to create visual contrast between classical carved details and clean modern lines.

Dust the frame gently using a soft dry brush, avoiding water, chemical cleaners, or damp cloths which can dissolve the water-gilded gesso layer.
