18th century
For Sale by Clockwise
Description

Clockwise is delighted to present for your consideration a fine 19th Century English eight day fusee timepiece dial clock. Finished in lovely mahogany with the narrow wooden surround typical of its time this is a lovely piece of furniture dating from circa 1830.

The case has a lovely patina and is of a standard pegged design with the surround pegged to the back box. The original cast bezel with convex glass closes firmly and frames the lovely twelve inch iron dial within the turned surround perfectly. The dial and falseplate are both stamped 'Wright, Birmingham' - they were England's main manufacturers of white clock dials. from 1805 - 1845. Original spade hands finish off the glorious appearance. The maker's name is present - Charles Brown of Bridport who was a watchmaker.

There is both a lower door and side door to the case and the eight day high quality movement, which has tapered shoulders to the plates (again, typical of the late Georgian/early Victorian period), has just been serviced with new line fitted and comes with my three year worldwide guarantee as standard.

Delivery can be arranged.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A fusee dial clock is an English wall timepiece featuring a cone-shaped pulley mechanism designed to equalise the force of the mainspring as it unwinds. Originating in the Georgian era, these clocks were widely utilised in public offices, stations, and residences for accurate timekeeping.

These timepieces were constructed using a turned mahogany or oak surround, a painted sheet iron dial, and a hand-cut brass movement housed within a rear wooden box casing. The dial glass was typically secured within a heavy cast brass bezel.

Authentic Georgian examples generally feature cast brass bezels with side or bottom access doors, wire or gut-driven fusee movements, and hand-painted Roman numerals. The dial face frequently includes the original makers name and town of origin.

Position the clock as a focal anchor above a fireplace mantelpiece, dining room sideboard, or within a hallway gallery wall. The warm mahogany tones and crisp Roman numerals complement both traditional period homes and contemporary minimalist spaces.

Mount the clock strictly level on a sturdy wall fitting to ensure the pendulum swings freely without rubbing. Dust the wooden surround with a dry cloth, avoid liquid cleaners on the painted dial, and arrange professional mechanical servicing every five to seven years.
