British Rail Oak Fusee Railway Wall Clock, Dorset

1940 - 1960
For Sale by Clockwise
Description

I am delighted to offer another great example of a genuine fusee railway clock from British Railways Southern Region, dating from 1957. This was supplied by the highly regarded Stockall Marples and Co manufacturer for a cost of €11-10-9d and was assigned to Bridport Parcels Office and then transfered to the Western Region on 1/1/1963.

The fusee eight day movement has rectangular plates with an anchor escapement and has been fully overhauled so benefits from my three year guarantee. The manufacturers reference number is stamped to both the front and back plates.

The eight inch dial is in very good condition with ''B.R. 11496" applied exactly as found on the dial prior to cleaning. The clock retains its original hands and the bezel locks securely into a tab.

The one piece turned oak ten inch diameter surround has fantastic colour and patination since its restoration. The circular surround is pegged to the back box in the classic manner with the usual latched side inspection door and lower regulating door with turnkey lock. There are brass countersink screws to each side of the case and a stabilising fitting to the lower case.

This is a rare and original clock in gorgeous condition and it’s one of many fusee and railway clocks I have for sale with many more coming.

Clockwise specialises in longcase and bracket clocks and with clients from the world of business, film, sport, royalty and aristocracy - yet more than happy with traditional clients - Clockwise has an unrivalled reputation for excellence and superb service.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A fusee railway clock is a mechanical timepiece featuring a cone-shaped pulley system designed to equalise the force transmitted from the mainspring as it unwinds. Used extensively across British railway stations during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, these clocks provided precise timekeeping essential for train schedules.

These clocks typically feature solid oak or mahogany cases with turned wooden surrounds, a hinged cast brass bezel with flat or convex glass, and a painted metal dial with black Roman numerals. Internal movements consist of heavy brass plates and steel arbors powered by a gut line or steel chain.

Authentic pieces usually retain regional or British Rail identification numbers painted on or transferred directly to the dial face. Additionally, inspect the rear case for brass movement stamps, paper maintenance records, or specific railway company inventory tags.

Mount the clock as a focal piece on a neutral painted wall, above a hallway console table, or within an office gallery wall. The warm wood tones and functional brass detailing complement both traditional period properties and modern industrial settings.

Ensure the clock is mounted securely and level on a structural wall. Have the internal mechanical movement serviced by a professional horologist every five to seven years, and gently wipe the wood case with a soft cloth and beeswax polish.
