G.p.o Antique Fusee Dial Wall Clock, Superb

1900 - 1920
For Sale by Clockwise
Description

Clockwise is delighted to offer one of two Post Office clocks for sale. This stunning example of the number 5 model has been tastefully restored and benefits from a chain-driven eight day fusee movement dating from 1913. The movement is stamped with the date of manufacture and other details laid out in the earliest configuration recorded. This 234 example has one revision over the slightly earlier 233 model and the cypher on the 12 inch restored dial would have been changed on the passing of the monarch.

Likely made by F.W.Elliot, this is a government issue clock which would have been displayed in public areas or a sorting office. It is complete with the Elizabeth II cypher to the twelve inch dial and the gorgeous oak case, with bottom and side door, house the brass bezel and glass. The dial surround is attached in the classic fashion to the main case by four wooden pegs and the case is a particular feature having a wonderful patina and in excellent condition, with a serial number stamped to the rear.

Internally the movement has been stripped, overhauled, cleaned and oiled through and is covered by my three year guarantee.

This is just one of many fusee clocks that I have for sale with more railway and government clocks due soon.

Clockwise specialises in longcase and bracket clocks and with clients from the world of business, film, sport, royalty and aristocracy - yet more than happy with traditional clients - Clockwise has an unrivalled reputation for excellence and superb service.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A fusee dial clock is a mechanical wall clock that incorporates a conical brass pulley system designed to equalise the torque produced by the mainspring as it unwinds. This mechanism maintains steady force on the gear train, ensuring reliable timekeeping accuracy.

Traditional fusee clocks feature solid timber surrounds typically made from mahogany, oak, or walnut, housing a painted iron dial, cast brass bezel, and a hand-crafted brass clock movement.

Authentic General Post Office wall clocks feature official G.P.O. markings or stamps on the dial and movement, often accompanied by a monarchs Royal Cypher, alongside a heavy fusee movement and cast brass bezel.

A fusee dial clock can be positioned as a focal point above a fireplace mantelpiece, dining sideboard, or within an entryway, pairing well with traditional woodwork or contemporary industrial finishes.

The movement should be wound regularly using a correctly sized winding key, kept in a stable humidity environment, and serviced by a qualified horologist every five to seven years.
