Fusee Dial Oak Wall Clock, Victorian, Lovely

19th century
For Sale by Clockwise
Description

Clockwise is proud to present another lovely clock for your consideration. This is a delightful English fusee dial clock from the renowned clock and watchmaker R. C Marsh & Co of Birmingham.

The substantial 8 day duration fusee movement has squared plates and the wire-driven movement is in perfect order having just been serviced and retains its original pendulum.

The twelve inch dial and original spade hands are in great condition and the oak surround and cabinet box, which has an opening side door and a lower door with working turnkey lock, are all in excellent condition. The brass bezel retains its tab and lock.

Richard Marsh of Birmingham worked at High St, New St. and Union Passage from 1863-1910.

There is a plate to the backbox with the details 'J. Schuler & Son'. They were watchmakers and clockmakers based at 127 City Road in London, operating during the late 19th and early 20th century so this clock has obviously been retailed from this company at some point in its life.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A fusee dial clock features a cone-shaped pulley system driven by a chain or gut line designed to equalise power from the mainspring, ensuring accurate timekeeping throughout its run.

Victorian dial clocks were typically constructed with solid oak or mahogany surrounds, cast brass bezels holding glass covers, and painted iron dials over heavy brass movements.

Authentic fusee movements feature thick cast brass plates joined by pillars, a spiral wire chain or gut line wound around a conical fusee barrel, and key-wound arbors.

Positioning a circular oak wall clock on a neutral painted accent wall or within a home study creates a clean, architectural focal point that bridges traditional and contemporary decor.

Mount the clock level on a sturdy wall fixing, wind it smoothly using a correct-fitting winding key, and keep the timber casing away from high humidity or direct heating elements.
