L.n.e.r Railway Dial Wall Clock, Chesterfield

19th century
For Sale by Clockwise
Description

Clockwise is delighted to welcome into its collection a lovely restored North Eastern Railway fusee wall clock dating from circa 1900. The eight day fusee rectangular plates (with shaped shoulders) anchor escapement movement has just benefitted from a full overhaul so the clock enjoys a three year guarantee.

The 10 inch dial is in excellent condition and bears the legend B.R (E) 3385. Records show this clock located at Chesterfield Central Goods in the Weighbridge Office. Chesterfield Central was originally part of the Great Central Railway (GCR) which was absorbed into the London and Northeastern railway (LNER) in the grouping of 1923; it was previously assigned to N.E.R as clock number 455.

Original spade hands behind a spun brass bezel with site ring, which retains its tab for security, complete the impressive appearance.

The mahogany dish-shaped case is of standard two piece pegged construction and there are two side inspection doors with tabs and a lower door which closes and locks securely with its original lock. The case also benefits from stabilising hooks to the bottom.

This smaller size railway clock is an increasingly rare find and in superb condition - genuine railway clocks are becoming ever more scarce so enjoy this clock whilst you can.

Clockwise specialises in longcase and bracket clocks and with global clients from the world of business, film, sport, royalty and aristocracy - yet more than happy with traditional clients - Clockwise has an unrivalled reputation for excellence and superb service.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A railway dial wall clock is a standardised timepiece historically used across British railway stations, signal boxes, and administrative offices to maintain accurate network timetabling.

These timepieces are typically constructed with turned mahogany or oak surrounds, heavy hinged brass bezels fitted with glass lenses, and painted iron or zinc dials.

Authentic examples usually feature hand-painted official serial numbers, regional railway company markings such as B.R.(E) or L.N.E.R., heavy brass bezels, and internal mechanical movements.

Position the clock on a narrow wall space, above a desk, or alongside framed technical drawings to create a focused historical statement within a hallway, office, or living space.

Keep the mahogany case clean by dusting with a dry microfibre cloth, wipe the glass cover gently, and have the internal mechanical movement serviced by a professional horologist every five to seven years.
