N.e.r Fusee Dial Railway Clock, Darlington, 10 Inch

19th century
For Sale by Clockwise
Description

Clockwise is delighted to welcome into its collection a lovely restored North Eastern Railway fusee wall clock dating from circa 1900. The eight day fusee rectangular plate anchor escapement movement is chain-driven and has just benefitted from a full overhaul so the clock enjoys a three year guarantee.

The 10 inch dial is in excellent condition and bears the legend B.R 2697. Records show this clock as originally sited in Darlington Bank Top Station in the downstairs Telegraph Office. This clock was originally NER clock number 1338 and Broxbourne AM is marked on the back; records show the Area Manager transferred it there in 1982. The clock was allocated its current number following the Transport Act of 1947 when British Rail was formed.

Original spade hands behind an original spun brass bezel, which retains its tab for security, complete the impressive appearance.

The mahogany case is of standard two piece pegged construction and there is a side inspection door with tab and a lower door which closes securely.

A copy of the L.N.E.R records accompanies this lovely clock.

This smaller size railway clock is an increasingly rare find and in superb condition - genuine railway clocks are becoming ever more scarce so enjoy this clock whilst you can.

Clockwise specialises in longcase and bracket clocks and with global clients from the world of business, film, sport, royalty and aristocracy - yet more than happy with traditional clients - Clockwise has an unrivalled reputation for excellence and superb service.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A fusee dial clock is a mechanical timepiece utilising a cone-shaped pulley system designed to equalise the torque from the mainspring as it unwinds, ensuring accurate timekeeping over its winding cycle.

Traditional railway wall clocks were constructed with turned mahogany or oak surrounds, cast brass bezels, glass covers, and painted sheet-iron dials fitted over brass movement plates.

Authentic pieces feature heavy brass fusee movements, wooden cases with side and bottom access doors, cast brass bezels, and original company markings or inventory numbers painted on the dial.

Mount the clock as a focal point on a neutral wall in an entryway, hallway, or above a sideboard, allowing the warm wood tones and brass details to complement contemporary furnishings.

Keep the movement serviced by a professional horologist every five to seven years, avoid displaying near direct heat sources or humidity, and dust the mahogany surround gently with a soft microfibre cloth.
