Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Bentwood furniture was pioneered in the mid-nineteenth century by Michael Thonet, who developed a technique using steam to bend beech wood into fluid, structural shapes. Coat stands made using this method became ubiquitous in European cafes, homes, and offices during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries due to their lightweight strength and elegant forms.

These stands are traditionally constructed from beech wood subjected to high-pressure steam, allowing the timber to be curved around moulds without breaking. The components are joined with screws and bolts, and pieces typically incorporate upper scrolled hooks, a central turned column, and a lower circular support ring designed to hold umbrellas.

Authentic period examples often feature paper labels or stamped impressions underneath the base ring or leg joints bearing manufacturers names such as Thonet, Mundus, or Kohn. Additional indicators include visible wood grain following the curvature of the bent timber, original brass or steel bolt fastenings, and consistent hand-turned finials.

A bentwood coat stand serves as a functional architectural focal point in a modern hallway, porch, or dressing room. Positioning the stand against neutral walls highlights its curved silhouette, pairing well with minimal contemporary decor or classical period features.

Keep the wood away from direct heat sources and excessive moisture to prevent warping or cracking of the steam-bent joints. Clean regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish occasionally to nourish the timber finish and protect against environmental dryness.
