Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1910s:
Maker's label of Wylie & Lochhead Ltd, Glasgow: fixes the maker to the period.
Mortise and tenon joinery throughout the base: solid early twentieth-century cabinet-making.
Medullary rays on the quarter-sawn oak slats: standard timber selection for the era.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This Edwardian Scottish luggage rack dates from 1910 and brings a traditional Highland hunting lodge design to a home interior. Made from solid oak with a dark brown finish, the piece is constructed with four straight square legs joined by lower side and double cross stretchers, and includes a slatted top platform with three longitudinal bars. The timber shows light surface wear on the lower leg and frame structure. Standing 46 cm high, 64.5 cm wide, and 45.5 cm deep, this practical accessory is suited for placement at the foot of the bed in a guest room or master bedroom to hold guest luggage or folded throws.

Originally designed for grand country houses and hotels in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, wooden luggage racks provided guest room functionality by elevating travel trunks and suitcases off the floor.

Traditional Scottish luggage racks were predominantly constructed using native hardwoods such as oak, featuring mortise and tenon joinery and slatted upper platforms to support substantial weight.

Authentic pieces typically display genuine wear along the slatted top, hand-cut joinery, historical timber patination, and structural weight characteristic of solid timber construction rather than modern veneers.

A slatted oak luggage rack functions efficiently at the foot of a bed in a guest bedroom, or as a low display stand for magazines and plants in an entryway or hallway.

Maintain oak furniture by dusting regularly with a dry cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish annually to protect the original finish and wood fibres.
