Imposing Winterhalder Quarterly Striking Bracket Clock

19th century
For Sale by Clockwise
Description

Clockwise is delighted to welcome into its collection a magnificent and exceptional boardroom clock by the celebrated German makers Winterhalder & Hofmeier, one of the foremost names in fine horology. Renowned for their uncompromising quality and superb engineering, their clocks remain among the most sought-after by collectors and connoisseurs alike.

The substantial solid oak case stands an impressive 24 inches (62 cms) tall and is of classic caddy-top form, exquisitely detailed with finely carved blind fretwork to both the upper and lower sections and surmounted by three finials. Elegant carved corner columns frame the case, whilst lined side access doors allow the high quality movement to be viewed and a glazed lockable front provides a full view of the impressive dial. Beautifully polished, the oak has acquired a rich, mellow patina that only decades of careful preservation can bestow.

The handsome brass dial is a masterpiece in its own right, featuring finely chased gilt corner spandrels, a delicately matted centre, and a silvered chapter ring engraved with bold black Roman numerals. Original hands complete the impressive appearance.

Powering the clock is the superb eight-day Winterhalder & Hofmeier movement, recently subjected to a complete overhaul and as such is offered in first-class mechanical condition and accompanied by my comprehensive three year parts and labour guarantee for complete peace of mind.

The movement strikes the quarter hours with a rich double “ting-tang” melody on a pair of substantial steel gongs, before sounding the hours on a sole heavy gong. The resulting tone is deep, resonant, and wonderfully sonorous, filling a room with the unmistakable voice of a truly important clock.

With its commanding proportions, exceptional craftsmanship, and outstanding presence, this is a boardroom clock of remarkable distinction. Equally at home in a grand country house, period office, or refined private collection, it represents an increasingly scarce opportunity to acquire one of the finest examples from this illustrious maker.

Clockwise specialises in longcase and bracket clocks and with clients from the world of business, film, sport, royalty and aristocracy - yet more than happy with traditional clients - Clockwise has an unrivalled reputation for excellence and superb service. Expert delivery can be easily arranged.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian bracket clock is a spring-driven portable timepiece, typically encased in fine timber such as oak, mahogany, or walnut, produced during the reign of Queen Victoria (18371901). They often display decorative architectural elements, turned columns, finials, and ornate brass or silvered dials.

Late 19th-century bracket clocks were predominantly crafted using solid hardwoods like oak and walnut for the outer case. Internal mechanisms relied on solid brass plates, steel arbors, and silvered brass chapter rings for dial visibility.

Authentic pieces from this era can be identified by high-grade German or English mechanical movements, movement maker stamps (such as W&H), heavy brass plates, polished steel pinions, and hand-carved wood joinery on the cases.

A carved bracket clock acts as an effective focal point when placed on a fireplace mantelpiece, dark wood sideboard, or within a minimalist library bookshelf. Pairing timber finishes with brass or metallic accents creates a balanced contrast in contemporary spaces.

The wooden case should be kept away from direct heat sources to prevent timber shrinkage, and cleaned gently with microfibre cloths or specialized furniture wax. The mechanical movement requires professional horological servicing and lubrication every three to five years.
