For Sale by Clockwise
Description

Clockwise is delighted to welcome into its collection this extremely fine quality oak bracket clock from the esteemed makers Winterhalder and Hofmeier. This clock has a restored decorative brass dial with spandrels to the corners, a matted finish to the dial inner and a silvered chapter ring. This piece is another high quality fantastic Winterhalder and Hofmeier eight day striking movement that strikes the half hour and hour on a single sonorous gong. Original blued hands compliment the overall appearance and the case has extensive carved decoration to the front along with inlaid dentil work, a curved pediment top and turned finials.

Winterhalder & Hofmeier were considered the finest clockmakers of the Victorian era and were based in Germany’s Black Forest region. The company was established in 1810 and in 1850 Anton Hofmeier joined the company, who was himself a clockmaker and relative to the Winterhalder family. The company then became known as Winterhalder and Hofmeier. This is the smaller size of this style available and has been fully restored and comes with its original pendulum, a winding key, and has my standard three-year global warranty

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A bracket clock is a type of portable tabletop clock originating in the seventeenth century, historically designed to sit on a matching wall bracket or mantelpiece.

These clocks typically feature solid or veneered timber cases, such as oak, mahogany, or walnut, housing brass mechanical movements with cast brass spandrels and silvered dials.

Authentic pieces often feature maker marks stamped directly on the rear brass movement plate, such as the initials W&H, alongside high-grade brass plates, heavy gongs, and hand-carved case decoration.

Position the clock as a focal point on a fireplace mantel, sideboard, or within a styled bookcase alongside framed artwork and ceramics to introduce texture and historical contrast.

Ensure the clock sits level on a stable surface, wind the mechanism regularly with the correct key, and arrange professional cleaning and oiling of the movement every five to seven years.
