Cathedral-arch, Quarter-striking, 8 Bells, Bracket Clock.

19th century
For Sale by Masons Antiques
Description

A rare opportunity to acquire a unique cathedral-arched bracket clock that is in lovely original condition.

The architectural oak case is beautifully constructed from the finest quality oak and is finished in a light golden oak colour. (Pictures 2 & 3 give the clearest indication of it's true colour). It contrasts beautifully with the 6" silvered dial that has a cast brass bezel and thick bevelled glass.

To the sides are brass lancet sound frets with blue cotton background that replicate cathedral style windows.

The 8 day, 3 train movement has just been fully overhauled by our BHI registered staff. It strikes the quarters on 8 bells and the hours on a seperate gong.

A key lockable, sound fretted, rear door.

A one-off indeed.

All cards accepted.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Gothic Revival bracket clock is a spring-driven table timepiece featuring architectural elements inspired by medieval ecclesiastical structures, such as pointed arches, tracery, and spires, popularised during the 19th century.

These clocks typically feature carved oak or mahogany cases paired with brass mechanical movements. High-grade examples incorporate complex mechanisms, such as quarter-striking trains playing on eight bells or gongs, alongside silvered brass dials.

Authentic 19th-century examples display crisp hand-carved blind tracery, solid wood case joinery, heavy cast brass bezels, and original mechanical movement plates often stamped with serial numbers or maker marks.

Positioning a carved oak clock on a neutral fireplace mantelpiece or a dark wood sideboard creates a strong focal point. It complements both traditional schemes and contrasting contemporary minimalist interiors.

Dust the carved timber case regularly with a dry, soft brush and avoid exposing the wood to direct heat sources or fluctuating humidity. Have the mechanical movement serviced by a professional horologist every five to seven years.
