Antique Miniature Architectural Mahogany Sedan Mantel Clock by Gibbs London Fusee

19th century
Description

Antique Miniature Architectural Mahogany Sedan Mantel Clock By Gibbs London.

This stunning antique miniature mantel / sedan clock has a mahogany case with a lovely rich colour and grain. The case then has a dome to the top as well as to obelisks to the front corners. The case then has brickwork effect edges to the front corners leading to the shaped base. The shaped base then has a ribbed section to the front as well as a further stepped out base. Finally the clock is finished by four round brass feet.

The dial is then enamel and set out in black Roman numerals with a thin ring of dashes to the outside marking the minutes. The dial then has a lovely arched, gilt surround that is engraved with lovely scrolling patterns. The dial is then finished by two shaped fingers as well as a protective glass set into the door.

The movement is then adjusted from the front and wound from the back. The movement then ticks away and works as it should. It is a verge fusee example of a sedan movement of the upmost quality. The movement is then engraved by the maker “Gibbs Banner Street London No 4732”. Finally the movement has a “Slow” and “Fast” adjuster built into the arch of the backplate.

William Gibbs of London is recorded working circa 1860 and this clock would date to around that period.

A truly beautiful and very rare timepiece that would look fantastic in any home or as part of a larger collection.

It measures approximately:

- 7.75” / 20cm Tall.

- 5.5” / 14cm Wide.

- 3.25” / 8cm Deep.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Gothic Revival clocks draw design inspiration from medieval ecclesiastical architecture, featuring motifs such as pointed arches, corner spires, pinnacles, crenellated parapets, and tracery carved into wooden cases.

English fusee clocks from this era typically feature dense mahogany or walnut cases, hand-engraved brass dial plates, silvered chapter rings, blued steel hands, and cast brass movement components.

Authentic fusee clocks display a conical brass pulley connected to a spring barrel via a micro-chain or gut line, hand-engraved maker signatures on the dial or backplate, and hand-cut gear teeth.

An architectural clock serves as an anchor piece on a fireplace mantelpiece, styled alongside framed artwork, brass candlesticks, or stacked vintage books in modern transitional or traditional settings.

Maintain timber cases by dusting with a soft microfibre cloth and applying beeswax polish annually, while mechanical movements should be professionally cleaned and lubricated by a horologist every five to seven years.
