Walnut Winterhalder & Hofmeier Striking Bracket Clock

19th century
Description

A late nineteenth century quarter chiming walnut dome top bracket clock by a quality German maker. This clock is unusual as, despite its small proportions it has a triple barrel movement hidden within its case. Striking the hours on a single lower toned gong and the quarters on four further gongs this is a lovely musical clock. The matted brass clock face with decorative spandrels has a silvered roman chapter ring, above which is a subsidiary dial allowing time regulation from the front. A rare little clock.

Winterhalder & Hofmeier were considered the finest clockmakers in the Victorian era. The company was established in 1810 by Thomas Winterhalder, and was based in southern Germany's Black Forest region. In 1850, relative and clockmaker, Anton Hofmeier, joined the company and Winterhalder &Hofmeier was born.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A bracket clock is a spring-driven table clock originally introduced in seventeenth-century England, named because it was designed to sit on a matching wall bracket to allow space for hanging weights. By the nineteenth century, advances in internal fusee and spring mechanisms meant these clocks could operate on flat surfaces such as tables, sideboards, or mantelpieces.

Victorian bracket clocks commonly feature solid or veneered timber cases made from walnut, mahogany, or oak. The mechanical movements are constructed from brass and steel, often accompanied by silvered chapter rings, cast brass decorative spandrels, and bevelled glass doors.

Authentic Winterhalder & Hofmeier clocks are identified by their movement backplates, which are frequently stamped with the makers initials W & H alongside registration numbers. Their craftsmanship is characterised by heavy brass plates, precise gear cutting, and high-quality striking or chiming trains.

Positioning a bracket clock as a central focal point on a fireplace mantelpiece, bookcase, or console table introduces historical warmth to contemporary schemes. Pair the piece with streamlined stone, neutral plaster backdrops, or minimalist ceramics to let the detailed woodwork and metalwork stand out.

Mechanical clocks should be wound regularly using the correct size winding key without forcing the mechanism. Keep the timber case away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent wood shrinkage or polish fading, and ensure the clockwork is serviced by a professional horologist every five to seven years.
