Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Georgian Rococo overmantel mirrors are defined by elaborate, asymmetrical scrollwork, acanthus leaf carving, and rocaille motifs. Designed to sit directly above a chimneypiece, these eighteenth-century mirrors often feature multi-plate glass sections within a carved giltwood frame to maximize light reflection in historic interiors.

Traditional giltwood frames were typically carved from softwoods such as pine or lime wood. The wood was prepared with layers of chalk-based gesso and clay bole before fine gold leaf was applied using water gilding techniques, which allowed for selective burnishing to create depth.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-carved joinery, visible wood grain or chisselled tool marks on the reverse, and natural oxidisation or foxing on the glass. The gilding often displays genuine surface wear, revealing the reddish or dark clay bole underneath the thin gold leaf layers.

Position the mirror centrally above a fireplace or a low console table to anchor a room. The golden tones and dramatic carved silhouette serve as a focal point, pairing well with simplified contemporary architectural moldings or contrasting neutral wall finishes.

Clean giltwood frames using a soft, dry microfibre duster or gentle artist brush to clear debris. Avoid liquid cleaners, water, or commercial polishes, as moisture can dissolve the underlying water-based gesso and strip away gold leaf.
