Lois Henri Foreau (1866-1938) - A Rural Landscape. Oil on Canvas.

19th century
Description

An outstanding rural landscape scene of large proportions by Lois Henri Foreau (French, 1866-1938). Oil on canvas.

Paris at the Salon des Artistes Francais from 1888 onwards. He was awarded medals at the Universal Exhibition in 1891, 1892, 1894 and in 1900. He was the president of the Association of French landscape artists, and in 1911 received the title of Chevalier de la Legion D’Honneur.

This striking landscape scene depicts a shepherdess and her sheep crossing a small footbridge with the landscape extending out into background. The dominant subject of the landscape is the tree which has been masterfully painted reaching up into the morning sky. The whole work has an almost dream like quality.

The work is housed in a fine gilt frame which is in an excellent condition throughout.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French Impressionist landscapes from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries emphasise atmospheric light, open-air composition, and visible brushwork. Artists focused on capturing transient natural effects across countryside subjects, waterways, and rural foliage.

Paintings from this period were typically executed using oil-based pigments applied to stretched linen or cotton canvas. Frames were constructed from carved wood with gesso detailing, finished in gold leaf or bronze powders.

Authenticity is evaluated through artist signatures, provenance documentation, period-appropriate canvas weave, natural craquelure pattern in the paint surface, and physical evidence of age on the timber stretcher bars and frame.

An antique landscape in a gilded frame provides visual texture and historical depth when contrasted against clean-lined modern architecture or minimal background tones. Positioning above a mantlepiece or sideboard creates a focal anchor within traditional or contemporary schemes.

Canvas paintings should be displayed away from direct sunlight, extreme temperature fluctuations, and high humidity. Cleaning should be restricted to gentle dusting with a soft brush, leaving varnish restoration and structural repairs to professional conservators.
