Description

Painted in the fleeting summer of 1911, this luminous oil on canvas depicts the dramatic cliffs and vast tidal plains of the Atlantic coast, where the sky and sea merge in a hazy, golden light. The painting has a quiet power, reflecting the era’s obsession with capturing the "fleeting moment" of nature’s most monumental forms.

The high, chalky cliffs on the right suggest the Alabaster Coast in Normandy, possibly near Varengeville-sur-Mer or Pourville

The artist employs a Post-Impressionist technique, using a high-keyed palette of ochre, soft violets, and sea-foam greens. The brushwork is energetic and varied: long, sweeping strokes define the distant cliffs, while short, rhythmic "staccato" dabs bring the foreground grasses and shifting sands to life.

While I have not been able to decipher the signature, the work bears a touching hand-written dedication from the artist: "À mon ami... souvenir affectueux," marking it as a deeply personal gift between friends during the height of the Belle Époque.

And oil on artists' board measuring 27 x 35 cm, our painting is signed, dedicated and dated at the lower right. Presented in its original frame, the overall size is 31 x 39 cm.
