Child's Play on the Beach, Evening in the South of France, Antique French Marine Landscape Oil on Canvas

Description

This painting tells the story of a tranquil summer's day. The setting is the South of France. Evening clouds are drawing in, the sky is turning dark, pink and purple, but there is still a little time left for play, for the children on the beach. We see their mother doing the laundry - as it was still done in the early 1900s, a little further on. There is activity in the cottage up on the cliff.

There is a lot to see in this picture, which presents a very realist image of its time, now far in the past. An oil on canvas dating from circa 1910, the painting measures 33 x 52 cm. Although it is signed, and the stretcher bear annotations concerning a sale, I have not been able to decipher the writing or signature.

The painting is presented in its original frame from Manifacier (with minor repair visible), which is exactly 100 years old, as indicates the label on the verso. I have photographed it as it is quite charming. It informs us that, to have an identical frame made, quote reference number 321 and the vintage! Manifacier was, of course, an award winning luxury framer in the city of Auxerre.The overall framed size is 52 x 71 cm.
