The Orchard - Antique Oil Painting

1940 - 1960
Description

Signed oil on canvas by the French artist Charles Betremieux (1919 - 1997) who was a creative artist. The painting shows view of an orchard and is painted with a fresh green palette.

Betremieux was born in 1919 and was predominantly inspired by the 1930s. He studied at the Ecole Beaux-Arts in Valenciennes with Raymond Debieve where their work was quickly noticed and rewarded:

The period of the 1930s is characterised by the clashing of many political ideologies, including Marxist Socialism, Capitalist Democracy, and the Totalitarianism of both Communism and Fascism. Surrealism continued to dominate in Europe, and had influence internationally. Artists such as Frida Kahlo and Diego Riviera in Mexico, worked to integrate the ideas posed by Surrealism into their radical political ideologies, developing a new kind of magic realism.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Impressionist landscape artwork of the 20th century focuses on capturing light, natural movement, and atmospheric moods through visible brushstrokes and a varied colour palette rather than sharp photographic realism.

Artists during this era typically worked with oil-based pigments mixed with linseed oil, applied onto stretched linen or cotton canvas, heavy board, or wooden panels.

Authenticity is assessed by examining artist signatures, surface craquelure, paint layering techniques, stretcher construction, and natural age-related oxidisation on the reverse of the canvas.

Landscape oil paintings balance modern minimal spaces by adding texture and depth; they work exceptionally well when framed in simple wooden mouldings and placed above consoles, mantels, or sideboards.

Oil paintings should be displayed away from direct sunlight and heat sources, dusted gently with a dry soft-bristle brush, and professionally restored if discoloured varnish or paint flaking occurs.
