Description

Here is a picture which brings you all the colour and joie de vivre of the Mediterranean. Gabriel Vie (1888-1973) had a knack of for painting works of art that lets us step right into them: one feels is if one were present in this tranquil, sunny landscape at the foot of the Alpilles mountain range, part of a slower, more leisurely world.

Gabriel Vié also an enormous gift for depicting water: its movement, its ripples and the way it reflects light. Look into the water he paints, and you will find it almost hypnotic.

In this oil on canvas dating from the 1940s or early 1950s, Vié shows us two washerwomen: one who works and one who doesn't! Vie paints in a manner that is tender, sympatheic, but without any sentimentality.

The painting is titled by the artist in French "Lavandières" on the verso, and bears Vié's red wax seal. Measuring 54 x 65 cm, it is signed at the lower left. The overall framed size in a quality frame is 72 x 84 cm.

Gabriel Vié was a member of the Salon des Artistes Français. At the Salon, he received a special mention at the exhibition of 1935, and was awarded its silver medal in 1942.
