French School | Belle Époque | Oil on Canvas | Circa 1900

A beautifully executed Belle Époque portrait depicting a young woman, believed to be the artist's daughter, standing amongst flowering hollyhocks in a sunlit country garden. Bonnardel was renowned for his elegant portrayals of women, capturing the grace, refinement, and gentle charm that defined the Belle Époque.

Alexandre-François Bonnardel enrolled at the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Lyon on 23 February 1891, studying in the studio of Antoine Christian Zacharie (1819–1899) before becoming a pupil of Jean-Baptiste Poncet. He made his debut at the Salon des Beaux-Arts in Lyon, where he was awarded a First Medal in 1899, and went on to exhibit at the Paris Salon in 1904.

In 1900, Bonnardel was appointed Professor of the Life Drawing Class at the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Lyon. He resigned from the post in 1918 following a scandal involving one of his students.
