Oak Geometeric Chest of Drawers

17th century
Description

A charming late 17th / early 18th century oak geometric chest of drawers, full of character and rich period presence. This beautifully proportioned piece is a particularly appealing small size, measuring just 77cm wide, 55cm deep and 73cm high, making it incredibly versatile and easy to place.

The chest displays wonderful colour and depth, with a rich, time-worn patina that only centuries of gentle use can create. The geometric drawer fronts add visual interest and reflect the craftsmanship and design sensibilities of the period, while the original style oak knobs and escutcheons complete the look perfectly.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Jacobean style furniture from the 17th century is defined by sturdy oak construction, geometric raised panel mouldings applied to drawer fronts, and turned bun or drop feet. Storage pieces from this era prioritise architectural proportions, dark timber finishes, and decorative iron or brass fittings.

These chests were primarily crafted from solid English oak using mortise and tenon joinery alongside hand-dovetailed drawer boxes. Decorative panel borders were created using applied mouldings, while drawers typically rested on side runners and featured brass drop handles or teardrop pulls.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-planed timber surfaces, pegged joinery, uneven drawer construction, and natural shrinkage cracks along side panels. Look for genuine wear on drawer runners, original brass key escutcheons, and historic dark patina within the grain.

A dark oak chest creates strong visual contrast when placed against light neutral walls or modern plaster finishes. Pair the piece with contemporary lighting, minimalist ceramics, or simple linen textiles to balance its historical visual weight.

Clean the surface regularly using a dry, lint-free microfibre cloth to remove dust. Apply a thin layer of natural beeswax polish along the direction of the wood grain once or twice a year, and maintain stable indoor humidity levels to prevent timber movement.
