Charles II Oak Geometric Chest of Drawers | Two-part | C1680

17th century
Description

DESCRIPTION

A handsome Charles II oak geometric chest of drawers dating from around 1680, retaining an attractive dark oak colour and crisp applied geometric mouldings. With its generous proportions and practical two-part construction, it is both an impressive decorative piece and a highly usable chest for a period or contemporary interior.

The plank top with moulded edge sits above two short and three long oak-lined drawers, each decorated with applied geometric mouldings. The chest is fitted with brass drop handles and engraved brass escutcheons, stands on bracket feet and separates into two sections for ease of transportation.

DIMENSIONS

104 cm high × 101 cm wide × 57 cm deep

CONDITION

The chest is in good, usable condition for a piece dating from the late 17th century, with an attractive colour and patina. The drawers run remarkably smoothly for a chest of this age, all joints are solid, and the chest is ready for use.

There are light marks, knocks and scratches commensurate with age and use. The brass handles and feet are later replacements and there are well-disguised filled handle holes to the upper drawers from previous fittings. There is some natural shrinkage cracking to the top and drawer linings, together with a small amount of historic woodworm. Restorative work has been carried out to the drawer runners during its lifetime, as would be expected with furniture of this age.

DESCRIPTIONS & VIEWING

We aim to describe every item as accurately and honestly as possible, highlighting both its strengths and any significant faults. As all of our pieces are antique or vintage, signs of age and use should be expected.

Our descriptions regarding age, attribution, origin and provenance represent our professional opinion. We are always happy to answer further questions or provide additional photographs before purchase.

Viewing is welcomed by appointment at our premises in North Yorkshire.

DELIVERY

Collection is welcome within seven days of purchase, unless otherwise agreed.

We can usually arrange nationwide delivery through trusted independent furniture couriers. As a guide, delivery for an average-sized chest of drawers within mainland UK is typically £80–100, although larger items and more remote locations may cost more. Delivery normally takes up to 14 days, although faster services may sometimes be available.

Please contact us with your postcode for a quotation before purchasing.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating during the English Restoration period (16601685), Charles II style furniture features applied geometric mitred mouldings, dark native timbers such as oak, and brass drop handles. The period marked a transition from utilitarian Jacobean forms to more decorative cabinetmaking techniques.

Chests from this era were primarily constructed using solid English oak, often joined with mortise and tenon joints and hand-cut dovetails. Drawers were typically supported on side-runners rather than bottom-runners, and fitted with cast brass drop-pendant handles and escutcheons.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-hewn oak drawer linings, side-hung drawer channels, and signs of historical hand-saw marks. Additionally, large 17th-century chests were frequently made in two separate sections to allow transport through narrow doorways and staircases.

A dark oak geometric chest serves as a grounding focal point when positioned against neutral or muted walls. Contrast the heavy timber by pairing it with modern abstract artwork, contemporary table lamps, or minimal ceramic vessels.

Dust regularly with a dry, soft cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to maintain the timber patination. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and high humidity to prevent wood shrinkage or splitting.
