18thc Oak Chest of Drawers on Stand

18th century
Description

A fine early 18th-century oak chest of drawers, dating to the first quarter of the 1700s, retaining its original stand with elegant cabriole supports. This handsome piece is constructed in rich, well-figured oak, displaying a deep, warm patina developed over centuries of use.

The upper section is fitted with four long, graduated drawers, each with finely grained drawer fronts and retaining their period brass swan-neck and escutcheon fittings. The drawers open smoothly to reveal traditional oak linings with hand-cut dovetail joints, clearly visible and indicative of early craftsmanship. Below, the chest is raised on its original base, incorporating three further drawers above a shaped apron, all standing on graceful cabriole legs terminating in pad feet.

The proportions are both robust and refined, making this chest a striking yet versatile piece, equally suited to a traditional country house interior or as a statement piece in a more contemporary setting. The overall condition is very good for its age, with expected marks, wear, and colour variation commensurate with over 300 years of history, all of which add to its authenticity and charm.

An excellent example of early Georgian oak furniture, this chest offers both practical storage and timeless decorative appeal.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A chest on stand, also referred to as a highboy or chest on frame, is a two-part furniture item comprising an upper chest of drawers supported by a dedicated elevated base set on legs.

These pieces were typically crafted using native timbers like oak or walnut, featuring hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, solid timber backboards, and hand-cast brass drop handles.

Authentic period examples exhibit signs of hand-craftsmanship, such as irregular hand-sawn drawer linings, original brassware fixing marks, hand-shaped legs, and natural timber shrinkage along broad board surfaces.

Position the piece as a focal point against a neutral backdrop, balancing its visual weight with contemporary lighting or minimalist artwork nearby.

Keep the chest positioned away from direct heat sources and bright sunlight to prevent cracking, wipe dust away using a soft cloth, and apply beeswax polish annually along the wood grain.
