An impressive large Georgian mahogany chest on chest, dating from the early 19th century. This handsome piece features two short over six long graduated drawers, together with a full-width brushing slide, offering both practicality and elegant period design. The moulded dentil cornice, finely figured mahogany and graceful splay feet enhance its classic Georgian proportions, while the generous drawer depth provides excellent storage. Presented in excellent restored condition with a rich warm patina, this substantial chest separates into two sections for easier transportation.

A Georgian chest on chest, also known as a tallboy, is a two-part wooden storage piece featuring a narrower upper chest mounted atop a wider lower chest of drawers. Popular throughout the eighteenth century, this design provided substantial vertical storage while maintaining manageable proportions for transport.

Georgian tallboys are predominantly constructed from dense mahogany, featuring hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, oak or pine drawer linings, and cast brass swan-neck handle plates. Upper sections frequently incorporate dentil cornices or moulded pediments.

Authentic period examples display signs of hand-planing on rear panels, hand-cut dovetails, original lock mechanisms, and natural timber shrinkage along solid side panels. Backboards were traditionally secured using hand-forged nails or wooden pegs rather than modern screws.

Position a tallboy as a focal anchor piece in a primary bedroom, dressing room, or hallway. Contrast its dark mahogany timber against neutral lime-washed walls and contemporary artwork to create a balanced interior.

Position the piece away from direct heat sources and light to prevent timber movement or fading. Clean surfaces with a soft microfibre cloth and apply beeswax polish twice annually, buffing along the direction of the wood grain.
