Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An overmantel mirror, traditionally known as a chimney glass, is a wide architectural mirror designed to sit directly above a fireplace mantle. Originating in the late 17th century and gaining immense popularity through the 18th and 19th centuries, these mirrors were engineered to sit flat against the chimney breast to reflect light throughout grand reception rooms.

19th-century gilt mirrors were constructed using a hand-carved timber substrate, often pine or lime wood, covered with layers of gesso (a mixture of chalk and binder). Decorative detail was built up using molded gesso before gold leaf was applied using either water gilding for a burnished finish or oil gilding for a matte surface.

Authentic period giltwood mirrors display subtle signs of age, including light cracking to the gesso known as craquelure, natural wear showing the red or grey clay bole beneath the gold leaf, and iron tack fixings on the reverse pine backing boards. The glass may also exhibit mild oxidation or foxing consistent with mercury or silvering techniques of the era.

A gilt overmantel mirror acts as a focal point above a fireplace or positioned on a deep console table in an entryway. Paired with neutral plaster walls, contemporary artwork, or minimalist ceramics, the contrast between classic gilt moulding and modern architectural lines provides depth and texture to contemporary schemes.

Gilt wood and gesso should be dusted exclusively with a soft, dry camel-hair brush or microfibre cloth to prevent flaking. Liquid cleaners and commercial polishes must be avoided, as water dissolves gesso and solvents strip gold leaf; professional conservators should handle any significant restoration or flaking gilding.
