Pair of Japanese Arita Imari Scalloped Charger Plates, C.1880-1900

Description

A large pair of Japanese Arita, Kyushu, porcelain scalloped charger plates in the Imari palette, dating to the Meiji period, circa 1880-1900. Their impressive scale, segmented decoration and rich colouring reflect the mature decorative language of late 19th century Japanese export porcelain intended for buyers who valued highly ornamented East Asian wares.

Each plate is painted in the traditional kinran-de palette of underglaze cobalt blue, iron red, green and gilt enamels. The decoration is arranged through asymmetrical fan-shaped reserves, angular cartouches and shaped panels derived from East Asian fans, screens and textile designs, creating the layered composition associated with Japanese Imari porcelain.

One plate is decorated with lively figural scenes including attendant children and small human figures within stylised landscape reserves, reflecting the karako tradition popular in Meiji-period export wares. The companion plate combines cranes, floral motifs and ornamental devices within the same asymmetrical decorative scheme associated with late 19th century Arita Imari production.

The reverse sides are decorated with freely painted underglaze blue karakusa-style scroll ornament, while the dense cobalt blue decoration and segmented panel structure further support attribution to Arita export porcelain.

Large matching charger plates of this type are particularly attractive for collectors because of their scale, decorative presence and richly ornamented Meiji-period design. They also display beautifully on walls or in cabinets.

FAQs

Imari porcelain is a style of Japanese export ceramic produced in the Arita region of Hizen province and exported from the port of Imari. Popularised from the late 17th century onwards, production continued through the Meiji period (18681912) with designs combining underglaze cobalt blue and overglaze enamels.

Imari ceramics are crafted from high-fired porcelain kaolin clay. The decoration process involves painted underglaze cobalt blue, followed by a clear glaze firing, and finished with secondary overglaze enamel painting, iron-red pigments, and gold leaf gilding.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-painted decoration with minor variation between pairs, asymmetrical composition reserves, spur marks on the base from kiln firing, and a dense porcelain body showing slight historical surface wear.

These decorative plates can be mounted on a wall using discrete plate hangers, arranged inside a glass-fronted display cabinet, or presented on acrylic stands on a console table or sideboard.

Clean gently using lukewarm water and a mild detergent applied with a microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners, abrasive sponges, or immersion, which can damage the overglaze enamels and gilding.
