Imari porcelain is a style of Japanese ceramic named after the port of Imari in Saga Prefecture, where it was exported to Europe starting in the seventeenth century. Characterised by rich underglaze blue and overglaze iron-red and gilt enamel decoration, it gained immense popularity across Western Europe during the Baroque and Georgian eras.

Traditional Imari plates are crafted from high-fired hard-paste porcelain kaolin clay. They are painted with underglaze cobalt blue before a primary firing, after which polychrome enamel glazes, typically iron-red and gold leaf, are applied and fired at a lower temperature.

Authentic Imari pieces usually feature spur marks on the base from kiln firing supports, along with slight imperfections in the glaze and cobalt blue lines that appear slightly blurred under the surface glaze. Additionally, authentic historical examples exhibit subtle hand-painted variations in the motif decoration rather than uniform transfer-printed lines.

Imari plates can be mounted on a neutral wall in a vertical column or symmetrical grid to introduce colour and pattern to a room scheme. They also function well displayed on wire stands within a dark wood sideboard, mantelpiece, or styled inside a glass-front cabinet alongside contemporary ceramics.

Clean Imari porcelain by hand using warm water and a mild non-abrasive detergent, avoiding harsh chemical cleansers or scouring pads. Because overglaze gilt and enamels wear away with friction and heat, these items should never be placed in a dishwasher or exposed to abrasive polishes.
