Pair of Japanese Edo Period 1603 - 1867 Gold Imari Plates c.1750

These are a beautiful pair of Japanese Imari plates from the Edo or Tokugawa period 1603 - 1867

These plates dating from c 1750 and due to the amount of gold paint used also known as gold Imari.

The plates are decorated with flowers and foliage in red, blue and gold.

The reverse decorated with a foliage.

The plates measures approx. 23.5cm in diameter

Slight fritting but no lines or restoration

FAQs

Imari porcelain produced during the Edo Period (16031867) is characterised by underglaze cobalt blue paired with overglaze iron-red enamel and gilding, created in the Arita region primarily for export to Europe.

These plates were formed from kaolin porcelain clay, decorated with cobalt oxide underglaze blue, fired at high temperatures, and subsequently detailed with hand-painted iron-red enamels and gold leaf accents.

Authentic 18th-century pieces display minor hand-painted variations, subtle pitting or spur marks on the base, and characteristic surface wear on overglaze gold leaf and enamels.

These decorative porcelain plates can be displayed upright on clear acrylic or brass stands upon a sideboard, grouped together on a wall gallery display, or placed inside open cabinetry.

Clean gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or feather duster, avoiding water immersion, chemical detergents, or abrasive materials that could erode the delicate overglaze gilding.
